With the approaching arrival of a new year comes the famous traditional celebrations that take place every December 31st in Antigua, this colonial city that quickly became one of the most popular destinations to celebrate New Year’s Eve.
Thousands of Guatemalans and visitors from around the world come every year to spend holidays in Antigua Guatemala, and one of the reasons, of course, is for the traditions, the beautiful architecture of this city and most importantly for the warmth of its people, this reflected in every celebration or event.
One of the most popular places to spend New Year’s Eve is around Antigua’s Central Park, the closest streets to the park are closed because of the activities that are prepared for this day. There are different “areas” of entertainment in each block, where you can enjoy of good music, traditional dances, mimes, food, street vendors, etc. starting at approximately 4pm, around 10:00 pm people start moving to the arch of Santa Catalina (to catch a good spot), where the main show will take place,-the fireworks show-, this show starts at 11:59 to welcome the new year and which last 45 minutes approximately, something worth knowing is that this street is totally crowded and if you don’t enjoy crowds, you should head to the Municipal Palace, where is another nice spot to see the fireworks, once the show ends you can join one of the street parties, or go to a bar or restaurant where you can surely have a good time.
