Undoubtedly Christmas is one of the most outstanding celebrations worldwide, during this day in Guatemala, families and their loved ones gather to share a delightful turkey or an exquisite tamal accompanied by an amazing ponche (traditional beverage). People start preparing to this season in the early December, doing the “Nacimientos” (for more information go to our last article), decorating the house, buying gifts and obviously buying the ingredients to prepare the famous tamales and ponche.
In Antigua, during December you can find a small Christmas market where people usually buy many things for decoration and for the “Nacimientos”. During Christmas Eve people usually prepare to baby Jesus Birth with a family reunion where all the closest relatives gather to share a delicious dinner and burn fireworks as mentioned before, in addition to the famous exchange of gifts. Then at midnight people pray to the baby Jesus, thank him for the life, and ask for blessings.
The next day (Christmas) is usually a day of celebration where families live the birth of Jesus with joy and fervor, and for Catholics, this day they also celebrate the Virgin of the “O” that goes through the main streets of Antigua in a procession.
